Although they were on the ballot 10 years ago without much notice – or votes, this year the MC5 is a 4-1 favorite to win induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s class of 2017. They are favorites just behind Yes, Janet Jackson, Electric Light Orchestra, and Pearl Jam. Nominees with worse odds behind them include The Cars, Joan Baez, Steppenwolf and Journey.

This is a no-brainer. These Proto Punk rockers may have had fewer hit songs, but they are every bit as relevant as inductees The Stooges when talking about the creation of a rock and roll genre. Their radical left-wing views combined with their high energy performances all but ensures their eventual induction. Besides, what would an inductee class be without at least 1 Detroit – area act.

Formed over 50 years ago, MC5 consisted of Rob Tyner on vocals, Wayne Kramer and Fred “Sonic” Smith on guitars, Michael Davis on bass, and Dennis Thompson on drums. While Tyner, Smith and Davis have all passed away, the music of MC5 will live on forever. So will this video of one of their live performances in 1973 singing Motor City is Burning. Enjoy, MOTHERFUCKERS!
